Good health provides a foundation for community and economic development. Many children and adults die each year globally from preventable deaths. IHI therefore seeks to reverse this by creating access to quality and affordable healthcare, well equipped facilities and well trained healthcare professionals. IHI engages government and other stakeholders in order to achieve its set goals in promoting health.
PREVENTIVE & CURATIVE SERVICES
In order to ensure that children, men, women and youth are treated for and protected from the leading causes of death, IHI undertakes the activities as given below;
1.) Empower health workers to deliver quality treatment for leading causes of death such as pneumonia, diarrhoea, malaria, TB and HIV among other ailments.
2.) Strengthen the diagnostic sytems
3.) Promote infection control measures
4.) Employ innovative ways such as the use of mobile technology to ensure that the underserved population have access to essential health services
IHI works to ensure that women and girls get access to quality reproductive health services. The organization together with other stakeholders is determined to increase the availability of safe and affordable contraceptive methods. It also helps promote skilled deliveries while it boosts the uptake of Family planning by providing targeted family planning counseling. IHI promotes the safety of women by offering community cancer awareness and creating access to free cervical and breast cancer screening.
IHI works to ensure that people are mentally and emotionally healthy by;
1.) Creating awareness to make people understand how stress can negatively impact their physical and mental health. 2.) Enlighten people on ways to support their emotional and mental wellbeing and cope with stressing situations 3.) Providing post trauma counseling 4.) Training counselors who will always be available to offer psyco-social support.
MATERNAL, NEWBORN & CHILD HEALTH
Cases of mothers and children dying everyday raises much concern. The leading causes of death among the children less than five years are pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria, preterm and birth complications.
IHI is working to reach the vulnerable children with quality comprehensive treatment as well as promote policies that favour child protection and survival.
Children need proper nutrients to grow healthy and strong. Proper nutrition strengthen a child’s physical and mental development. IHI works with the ministry of health and other stakeholders to improve maternal and child health through nutrition interventions. It works with sectors such as agriculture and education to support food security programs and promote livelihood strengthening programs.
In collaboration with like-minded partners, IHI seeks to optimize the uptake of other vital Maternal and child health services such as immunization,family planning and prevention of mother to child HIV transmission (PMTCT).
WATER, SANITATION & HYGIENE (WASH)
Access to safe and sufficient water, improved sanitation as well as maintaining good hygiene is crucial to human health, wellbeing, dignity and development. With thousands of deaths each year caused by unsafe drinking water, poor sanitation and insufficient hygiene practices, IHI in collaboration with other partners work to promote safe hygiene practices, provide improved sanitation as well as creating access to improved and sufficient safe and clean water. IHI implements WASH projects in health facilities, schools, markets, communities, Refugee and IDP camps where members are equipped with skills they need to manage their water supplies.
